The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006. This Act not only replaces the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 but also consolidates the other food acts like the Fruits Product Order (FPO), Meat Food Products Order, Vegetable Oil products (control) Order, the Milk and Milk Products order. These Acts, earlier handled by different ministries, will now fall in the ambit of the FSSAI. The authority is a statutory body with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare being the administrative head.
The Supreme Court appointed joint committee was unable to submit its interim report on endosulfan on July 15 and asked for another eight weeks to prepare the report. On the other hand, the pesticide manufacturers and formulators association of India, one of the respondents in the case, pleaded with the court to give an immediate relief to them to allow exporting the pesticides, the stocks for which were already present with the manufacturers.
