The Puzzle of Forest Productivity

Are Forest Development Corporations Solving It Right?

This report is an outcome of another report. In 2015, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) issued guidelines for the participation of the private sector in afforestation of degraded forests. The guidelines argued that poor productivity of forests has led to a shortage of raw materials to industry. Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) argued against the 2015 guidelines on the ground that the proposal would destroy the flourishing farm-forestry and agroforestry sectors in the country, which are more than capable of meeting the raw material demands of the industries. In its report titled Fumbling with Forests: Why We Should Not Handover Forests to the Private Sector, CSE also flagged concerns that the proposal would convert vast stretches of forestlands into large monoculture plantations that would only be of use to wood-based industries, not the forest-dependent communities or the ecology.

FSSAI Watch

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006. This Act not only replaces the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 but also consolidates the other food acts like the Fruits Product Order (FPO), Meat Food Products Order, Vegetable Oil products (control) Order, the Milk and Milk Products order. These Acts, earlier handled by different ministries, will now fall in the ambit of the FSSAI. The authority is a statutory body with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare being the administrative head.

Interim Report Deadline Extended

The Supreme Court appointed joint committee was unable to submit its interim report on endosulfan on July 15 and asked for another eight weeks to prepare the report. On the other hand, the pesticide manufacturers and formulators association of India, one of the respondents in the case, pleaded with the court to give an immediate relief to them to allow exporting the pesticides, the stocks for which were already present with the manufacturers.
