CSE Media Fellowships Programme for the Global South

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a New Delhi-based public interest research and advocacy organisation and recipient of the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize. It was recently ranked 17th among a global listing of top environmental think tanks in the Global Go To Think Tank Index, compiled each year by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Programme of the University of Pennsylvania in the US.

As part of its global programme, CSE has offered two different fellowships to journalists in Africa and Asia.

The following members served as a jury:

  • Mr. Otula Owour, Science Editor, Science Africa Magazine
  • Mr. Wycliffe Muga, Weekend Editor, Star Magazine
  • Ms. Anumita Roychowdhury, Executive Director - Air Pollution And Clean Transportation Programme
  • Mr. Suresh Kumar Rohilla Programme Director - Urban Water Management.

The subject matters for the fellowships were as follows:

Fellowships on air and mobility issues

A total of five fellowships have been awarded on the subjects of clean air and sustainability. Fellows will explore issues such as air pollution (assessment and monitoring, causes, effects of and policies on pollution), mobility (connection between pollution and mobility, public transport and private transport, affordability of transport, design of cities to cater to vehicles or pedestrians and cyclists, congestion, and other issues.

Fellowships on water issues

A total of five fellowships have been awarded on the subject of water. The issues will vary from country to country and would cover subjects such as drought and their management, rainwater harvesting, access to clean water, water supply challenges, ground water management, use of surface water, faecal sludge management, waste management, preservation of natural water resources (such as lakes, ponds and rivers), among others.

Award

USD 2,000 is awarded to each fellow to support research, travel and writing between the given period. The award will be released as a single installment at the end of fellowship period.
