Orientation Programme on Urban Air Quality Management Strategies

September 18-20, 2017

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising an orientation programme on Urban Air Quality Management Strategies for officials from regulatory bodies from Delhi and NCR and other cities of India. This programme represents our initiative to promote good regulatory practices in air quality management focusing on reducing emissions from vehicular and other air pollution sources.

Air pollution is the fifth largest killer in India. Rapid urbanisation, motorisation and sprawls is making our cities victims of killer pollution and congestion. Public health risk from air pollution is grave and growing. There is a need to assess risk from all sources of pollution, identify, prioritise and implement actions and strategies (short-term priority actions and medium to longer term) to meet clean air target. Clean air action planning and time-bound implementation with adequate stringency, monitoring and compliance is therefore important. This interactive forum will cover lectures, audio visuals and field visits on a range of issues including:

  • Understanding challenges of urbanisation, motorisation and clean air action planning

  • Air quality monitoring and management

  • Reducing emissions from new and on-road vehicles

  • Non-motorised transport network, public transport augmentation and multi-modal integration strategies

  • Parking policy to reduce congestion and pollution

  • Traffic management

  • Reducing emissions and control strategies for other air pollution sources - power plants, industries, generator sets, open burning etc
