Training Programme on Decentralised Wastewater Treatment & Reuse in Bangladesh: March 3-6, 2012

CSE under its South Asia Programme organized the second batch of training programme on ‘Decentralised Wastewater Treatment and Reuse’ from 3-6 March, 2012 in partnership with Water Aid Bangladesh. The training programme aimed at sector capacity building planning and design of  sustainable and affordable decentralised wastewater treatment systems including promoting reuse and recycle in Bangladesh as well as providing technical assistance for implementation of model projects that demonstrate potential of new paradigms to improve the water and sanitation status in the country.

The four days training programme was held in CCDB HOPE Centre at Savar, near Dhaka. The 28 participants included practitioners (engineers, architects, consultants), academicians and government officials from Shakhipur Pourashava and Chittagong City Corporation. The training comprised technical sessions on new paradigms of wastewater management focusing decentralised wastewater treatment systems, water efficiency including reuse/ recycles, field visits to showcase the pilot projects implemented in Bangladesh and practical sessions in groups on different project proposals including design and cost benefits of decentralised wastewater treatment systems.

Speaking at the closing session of the training programme, Dr Khairul Islam, Country Director, Water Aid Bangladesh stated the usefulness of Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems for the sustainability of urban water resource in Bangladesh and expressed to continue the collaboration with CSE in terms of national sector capacity development as a knowledge partner for developing their national septage policy and for certain institutional development in imparting training on regular and continuous basis. In his concluding speech, he addressed the participants especially the young generation who are the future driving force of the country to bring a change in the current paradigm of water management.
