Waste Management: Policies, Issues, Challenges and Way Forward: August 19-23, 2013

Waste management is a critical issue for Indian cities. Increasing population levels, rapid urbanization and rise in living standards have greatly accelerated the generation of waste in our country. Regulators involved in waste management have to face a number of challenges to provide an efficient and effective system to the citizens. CSE’s five day programme on Waste Management addressed the needs of regulators on the issues of waste management. The programme covered municipal solid waste, hazardous waste and bio-medical waste which are under the purview of State Pollution Control Boards and Pollution Control Committee.

It discussed national and international laws applicable for waste management and provided in-depth knowledge on suitable methods for recycle, reuse and coprocessing of wastes and scientific disposal of wastes. The training programme consisted of lectures and field trips to enable the participants to learn the best practices in inspection, monitoring and compliance assurance of waste handling facilities during design, construction and operational phase.

The training programme consisted of following session

  • Environmental Impact Assessment of Hazardous waste landfill site
  • Design and assessment of secured landfill site
  • Municipal solid waste management: challenges in implementation
  • Biomedical waste management: Best practices
  • Waste Management practices in Sweden
  • Site visits

  • Mainstreaming SFD and Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in Urban Sanitation Programming

    Date: June 28-29, 2016

    Venue: Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

With increasing urban population, the sanitation crisis is growing. Even if the access to toilet has improved, the fate of the excreta generated is unclear. The conventional ways of collecting and treating/disposing waste water have failed to provide lasting solution to the water crisis we face today.
