International Conference on Confronting Environmental challenge

Why
The coal-based power sector is in the midst of a major global transition. Since it will remain central to energy requirements, its significant environmental impact needs to be urgently addressed.

How
Representatives from emerging economies including China, India, Indonesia, South Africa will share their views on the role of coal in their national energy mix, approaches and challenges in technology transition, policy and regulatory initiatives, and best operating practices. Representatives from developed economies including France, Germany and the United Kingdom will additionally share their views on improving regulatory enforcement and compliance mechanisms.

What
These different perspectives will help bring together shared learnings to improve the performance of the thermal power sector globally, and identify ways forward to comply with the new environmental standards that have been recently enacted in India. The conference will also address the challenges and effective implementation of CEMS.

Key themes

  • The role of coal in the national energy plan

  • Feasibility of transitioning towards new technologies

  • Balancing the water energy nexus

  • Developing better frameworks for managing fly ash and promoting its re-use

  • Developing a meaningful roadmap for implementing the new emissions and water consumption standards

  • Challenges in implementing Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS)
