Venue: Center for Science and Environment (CSE), 38, Tughlakabad Institutional Area, New Delhi-110062

Center for Science and Environment (CSE) organised a 3 day training programme for capacitating practitioners working with WaterAid India and its field partners on ‘Rainwater Harvesting System’.

The purpose of the training was to create an enabling environment for mainstreaming sustainable water management in urban and rural India with focus on rainwater harvesting (RWH).

The three day programme focused on RWH and the potential it holds in augmentation of water availability by using public spaces to recharge groundwater or store and reuse the rainwater. The participants got the opportunity to plan and design a RWH system and also learn about best management practices.

The training started with sessions covering basics of rainwater harvesting components. Participants were also exposed to the various urban and rural RWH systems. This was concluded with a brain storming exercise on data collection. Second day of the training began with the field visit (Nizamuddin East Colony & Indian Spinal Injury Centre) where the participants interacted with the implementers to understand the reason, challenges and impact of the implemented RWH systems. The last day of the training included the presentation on post implementation issues such as social, economical, environmental, operation & maintenance etc. A detailed group exercise on plan and design of RWH structures was carried out by participants to get acquainted about the technicalities involved in it.

The training programme ended with feedback and follow up session. Participants expressed their interest to implement projects on RWH within their domain. CSE concluded the programme by emphasizing the way forward to have a cadre which will multiply the knowledge by implementing the RWH so that the next generation is sensitized about it.
