Sensitization Programme for Elected Representatives of Jharkhand

A three day AMRUT training programme was organized from December 4-6, 2017 to sensitize the elected representatives of the Jharkhand. The training programme was organized by Water Unit, CSE along with Waste Management and Air Pollution Team, CSE. A total of 24 participants from ULBs of 7 town/cities participated in this training programme. 

The training oriented and sensitised the participating officials on urbanization scenario, AMRUT: objectives, convergence of urban missions, key environmental issues and challenges the country is facing currently, policy and reforms concerning air, water and waste. It was followed by two day field visits to various sites across Delhi showcasing existing best management practices in the above sectors.

On first day, Dr. Suresh Rohilla, Director of Water Unit, CSE inaugurated the training. He briefed about CSE’s engagement and overview of the urbanisation and strategy for the planning, development and governance in order to promote sustainable urban growth. This was followed by technical session on air quality by Ms. Priyanka Chandola, Programme Manager of Air Pollution team, CSE, where she discussed about the pollutant involved and the sources of air pollution. For making the session interactive, a group exercise focusing air pollution and transportation was organized and presented by participants. 

Further, Dr. Sonia Henam, Deputy Programme Manager of Waste Management, CSE discussed about the waste management issues and challenges in urban areas. She presented one of the successful case studies on waste management in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India. Furthermore Mr. Mritunjay Kumar, Programme Officer of Water unit, CSE, gave an overview of the key schemes of MoHUA and how the convergence of these schemes has profound impact to check duplication and leakages. The last session was detailed about the political economy of water, waste water and septage, where Dr. Mahreen Matto, Programme Manager of Water Unit, CSE, highlighted the importance of paradigm shift in conventional management to sustainable management of sewerage and septage.

The second and third day of the training programme focused on the site visits of best management practices implemented across Delhi. This includes Non-motorised Transport, Infrastructure and Design at ITO, Constructed Wetland for Wastewater Treatment at Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) (http://cseindia.org/content/constructed-wetland-wastewater-treatment-ind...), Decentralised Wastewater Treatment system (DWWTs) and Rainwater Harvesting system at CSE, Rain Water Harvesting system at Jamia Hamdard University (http://cseindia.org/content/rainwater-harvesting-system-jamia-hamdard-un...), followed by a site visit on household level waste management system at New Moti Bagh housing colony (http://www.downtoearth.org.in/coverage/make-wealth-from-waste-47164). 

At the end of third day, a feedback session was held which was moderated by Dr. Suresh Rohilla to understand about the relevance of the entire training programme. Participants expressed their confidence in replicating the best management practices in their wards. Thereafter certificate was distributed among the participants.
