Background

The total area of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) building is 1,000 sq. m. The office gets most of its water supply from groundwater through its borewell. The rainwaterwater harvesting system was installed in the building in June 1999.

• The Kerala Municipality Building Rules, 1999 were amended by a notification dated  January 12, 2004 (Local Self Government Department Notification) issued by the

Government of Kerala to include rainwater harvesting structures in new constructions.  Exemption from this can be granted for cases where water logging is common or in areas with impermeable subsoil conditions to considerable depths.

How much will it cost to catch rain?

When community come together to harvest rain, the per-capita investment goes down. For instance, Panchsheel Park Colony about 1000 residents pooled in Rs 4.5 lakh to harvest more than 170 million litres of water annually.
