Overview Many remote villages and poor communities have no sanitation infrastructure in place. The health impacts of a lack of sanitation can be severe as the concentration of stagnant human waste allows numerous airborne and mosquito-borne diseases to fester, and can potentially pollute drinking sources. For years, certain communities have developed innovative, but rudimentary technologies and infrastructure to manage wastewater. While not necessarily able to treat wastewater scientifically, the use of traditional wastewater management practices can have an important impact on the health and ecological wellbeing of communities. |
