CSE Press Release: Petrol price hike is 'mindless'

CSE slams petrol price hike as “mindless” as it does not narrow the price gap with diesel

  • This is leading to gross misuse of diesel by rich car owners and massive revenue losses to the government

  • The government should either ban use of diesel in cars or increase price of diesel and tax on diesel cars

Proposed fuel economy standards a complete sell-out, says CSE

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) releases proposed fuel economy standards for cars -- CSE lambasts them as too little too late.

  • The standards require car manufactures to do nothing until 2015 and only a marginal improvement thereafter.

CSE welcomes and supports finance minister's move to consider removing subsidy on diesel used in passenger cars

  • Says this will check use of diesel in cars and cut toxic risk from diesel emissions. Will curb energy guzzling incited by cheap diesel and the shift towards bigger engines and SUVs

  • Will help government cap revenue losses from luxury consumption of diesel

Budget skirts the real issues, does not do enough for environmental concerns: CSE

  • Finance minister loses courage to put fiscal breaks on SUVs and diesel cars

  • Budget fails to put forward any new proposal to strengthen bus transport

Why is the Finance Minister so willing to allow the rich car owners to mis-use diesel subsidy? Why he wants to forego revenue from this luxury consumption and put peoples’ health and energy security at risk? There is also no support for the bus transport for the masses.

Finance Minister, it is time to take a decision to stop misuse of diesel subsidy by the rich diesel car owners. Any further delay will cost hugely to the nation and our health

Keep the taxes on big cars effectively high and not give in to industry pressure. Link up taxes with the actual fuel use of the car to prevent fuel guzzling
