Wake up and smell the air

Our health is not on anybody’s agenda. Or, we just don’t seem to make the connections between the growing burden of disease and the deteriorating condition of our environment. We don’t really believe the science, which tells us each passing day how toxins affect our bodies, leading to high rates of both morbidity and mortality. It is true that it is difficult to establish cause and effect, but we know more than enough to say that air pollution is today a leading cause of both disease and death in India and other parts of South Asia.

Towards Lake Conservation

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) India and Bangladesh Institute of Planners, Bangladesh (BIP) Bangladesh jointly organised a day  long workshop on lake conservation of Dhaka on August 7, 2011, The workshop was attended by researchers, activists, planners, advocates and regulators from both Bangladesh and India. The meeting was a first initiative to influence the policy debate on lakes in South Asia.

Workshop on Air Quality and Environmentally Sustainable Transport in Colombo: April 28, 2011

The Clean Air and sustainable mobility programme of the Centre for Science and Environment organised the Sri Lanka Country Workshop on Air Quality and Environmentally Sustainable Transport along with the Air Resource Management Centre (Air MAC), Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Transport in Colombo.

Training Programme on Urban Rainwater Harvesting, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 27-29 April 2011

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage (MWS&D), Sri Lanka and Colombo based NGO, Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) organised a three day training programme in Colombo on ‘Urban Rainwater Harvesting’ for Srilankan government officials between 27th and 29th April, 2011.

First Country Media Briefing on challenge of urban air quality and mobility management

CSE organised its First Country Media Briefing on “challenge of urban air quality and mobility management” in Dhaka on January 22,2011.

All South Asian Cities are suffering from vehicular pollution and mobility issues; Dhaka is no exception. This media briefing was organised to enter in a dialogue and join hands to find a way towards better air quality standards and improved mobility management.

The half a day workshop was attended by over seventy media personnels, both from electronic and print media, in both English and Bengali.
 

Alarm over worsening air quality and traffic congestion in South Asian cities, ongoing action must gather momentum

• New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and the Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh (FEJB), Dhaka organise a media briefing on the ‘Challenge of Urban Air Quality and Mobility Management’

• Dhaka has inherent advantages in its dominant commuting practice of using bus, non-motorised vehicles and walking, to manage its air pollution and urban mobility issues. Dhaka can learn from Delhi’s mistakes and avoid pro-car policies

Experience Sharing Dialogue in Dhaka: Improving Quality and Performance of Natural Gas Vehicle Program in South Asia

Dhaka and Delhi met to discuss natural gas vehicle programme -- a unique opportunity for a clean up in the region where the mainstream technology of diesel and petrol are languishing. CSE-DOE event enthused all for a more robust CNG strategy for cleaner air.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in partnership with the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Sri Lanka, has conducted two training programmes in Srilanka for the CEA officials from 25-29 April, 2011 and 21-25 November, 2011.
