Training programme on ‘Designing of Rainwater Harvesting for Sustainable Drinking Water Supply System’ for UP Jal Nigam and WSSO officials

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) designated as Key Resource Centre under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS) is organizing a four days training programme on ‘Designing of Rainwater Harvesting for Sustainable Drinking Water Supply System’ from 5-8 August 2013.
The audience will be UP Jal Nigam and WSSO officials from the targeted districts (Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Bijnor, Jyotiba Rao Phule Nagar, Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bulandshahr, Rampur, Badaun, Bareilly, Pilibhat, Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Kanshiram Nagar, Aligarh, Farrukhabad, Etah, Mainpuri, Mahamaya Nagar, Mathura, Agra and Firozabad) to be held at Central Public Works Department (CPWD) Training Institute, Kamla Nehru Nagar, Hapur Road, Ghaziabad, UP.
The aim of the proposed training programme is to provide hand holding support in planning, designing and implementation of sustainable drinking water supply system with focus on rainwater harvesting facilities that can be operated as well as maintained at the individual and community level.
‘Septage’ is both solid and liquid waste that accumulates in onsite sanitation systems (OSS) e.g. septic tanks. This has three main components – scum, effluent and sludge. It has an offensive odour, appearance and contains significant levels of grease, grit, hair, debris and pathogenic micro organisms. The construction and management of OSS are left largely to ineffective local practices and there is lack of holistic septage management practices.
The Ministry of Urban Development has acknowledged the lack of skilled man power in urban local bodies across India and has therefore developed the ‘Capacity Building Scheme for Urban Local Bodies’ (CBULB). The programme aims to enhance knowledge, skills and attitude of city officials for the mainstreaming of reforms and best management practices (BMPs) of sustainable water and wastewater management through training programmes followed with field exposure visit, seminars and workshops.
