Iron And Steel Industry

Hills of greyville

Fast-expanding steel industry yet to find an effective way to reuse its waste product, slag

The road to Tarkera village in Rourkela offers an unusual sight: grey hillocks amid lush green hills. The strange addition to the landscape is slag, a waste product of the steel industry, which has piled up over decades.

CSE's Environmental Assessment of Jasodharpur Industrial Area in Uttarakhand

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) presented its environmental assessment of Jasodharpur Industrial Area (JIA) in a public meeting on June 11, 2012 held at Maganpur village near Kotdwar town in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand.

The Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board had requested CSE to carry out this assessment.

The steel shock

When the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) started its Green Rating Project in the mid-1990s, India had just liberalised its economy. Fears were that it would be disastrous if the country took the route to economic growth that ignored environmental considerations. The Green Rating Project was designed to find ways of measuring the environmental performance of companies and to drive changes in policy and practice through public disclosure.

POSCO: take land but give life

The sight on television was heartbreaking: children lying in rows in the searing sun to be human shields against the takeover of their land for Korean giant POSCO’s mega bucks project. Facing them were armed police sent by the state government to assist in the operation.

Sponge iron’s dirty growth

In the years to come, India's expanding steel production will be largely driven by sponge iron. Sponge iron, also known as direct reduced iron(DRI), is produced from direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets or fines) by a reducing gas produced from natural gas or coal. Sponge iron gives a cheaper way of producing steel which has a high demand in the market.
