Regulating Pesticide Residues in food

Today, our farming and food is full of toxins and synthetic substances in the name of ‘modern agriculture’ and a thrust to increase yields at any cost. The cumulative and synergistic effects of all these products cannot even be estimated by the producers and users. Hundreds of pesticides have been registered in the country over the years even as the government takes years to ban or restrict a handful of chemicals every decade or so.

European Food Safety Authority to assess the impact of pesticides and GMOs on bee health

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is assessing the impacts of pesticides and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) on bee health. A task force under coordination of Emerging Risks Unit (ERU) of EFSA submitted its inventory on its activities on bees on October 30, 2012.

Canada adopts new food safety law

In a bid to modernize the food safety system in the country, the Canadian Government has adopted new food safety Act. The new Act named ‘The Safe Food for Canadians Act’ came into force from November 26, 2012. It will bring all food safety concerns under one umbrella. Earlier food safety in Canada was being regulated under different Acts like Canada Agricultural Products Act, the Fish Inspection Act, the Meat Inspection Act, and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.

Halt on GMOs

The Parliamentary standing committee on agriculture came up with its 37th report on ‘Cultivation of Genetically Modified Food Crops – Prospects and Effects’. Basudeb Acharia, the chairman of the committee, presented the report in the parliament on August 9, 2012. The report covers wide range of issues like approval of Bt brinjal and regulations for genetically modified (GM) crops in India.

In a pickle

Consignment contaminated with banned dye

Recently consignments of pickle from India were found to be contaminated with a banned dye Sudan–I. The dye is banned in food in most countries including European Union, Canada, US and India. The consignment, being dispatched by the Chennai office of the Spices Board of India, was being exported to Canada.

GM labeling made mandatory in India

But is it going to be effective enough

Use of genetically modified constituents for processed food will soon have to be mentioned on labels. A gazette notification from the Ministry of Consumer Affairsmakes it mandatory for packaged foods using genetically modified products as ingredients to carry such labels from January 1, 2013. The notification was out on June 5, 2012.

Corn Sugar or HFCS: What’s in the name

The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) rejected a petition filed by Corn Refiners Association to change the name of ‘High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)’ to ‘corn sugar’. The petition was filed in October, 2010.

FDA bans BPA in baby bottles

The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) banned use of Bisphenol – A (BPA) in baby bottles in July 2012. The ban was announced on the request from American Chemistry Council, the chemical industry’s main trade association in US, to phase out the use of the chemical. The US chemical industry have already stopped using BPA in baby bottles and the request by the council is being seen as a step to establish goodwill among customers.
