CSE recommends BOD as suitable parameter for water quality, wants equipment approval simplified

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a satisfactory parameter to measure water quality. However, the process of measurement should be improved and speeded up. Two ways of doing this are using a bio-sensor based system or a spectrophotometer, that give results within minutes and are nearly as accurate as laboratory-based monitoring. That said, conventional laboratory testing must also be made more robust with clear protocols for sampling, transport and testing.

Workshop on Green Rating of Indian Iron and Steel Sector

CSE’s Green Rating Project (GRP) has for the first time carried out an independent, rigorous and transparent assessment of India’s iron and steel sector. The project was sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), Government of India and the UNDP.The environmental ranking for 21 large steel plants is based on performance assessment of over 150 indicators ranging from design, efficiency of production process, pollution compliance, water, energy, safety to local community response.

Sponge iron’s dirty growth

In the years to come, India's expanding steel production will be largely driven by sponge iron. Sponge iron, also known as direct reduced iron(DRI), is produced from direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets or fines) by a reducing gas produced from natural gas or coal. Sponge iron gives a cheaper way of producing steel which has a high demand in the market.

How we rate an industrial sector?

The project was conceived in the mid- 1990s when Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) director Anil Agarwal visited the United States. He read about the work of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called the Council of Economic Priorities (CEP), which rated the social and environmental performance of industries in the US.

Is the Indian automobile sector as environmentally conscious as best in the world?

NO! Automobile sector has fared badly. Under the project rating scale, we were to award five leaves award to the best company. But sadly no auto company deserved this honour. The best company got less than 45 per cent marks getting a mere three leaves award. But the sector as a whole got even lesser, scoring 31.4 per cent, deserving only two leaves award.

About Industry & Environment Unit

CSE's Industry and Environment Unit addresses an array of environmental issues related to Indian industries. It conducts research and advocacy on the impact of industrial pollution and provides training in related issues.
