The Green Rating Project (GRP) assesses, and makes public, the environmental performance of companies within a sector in India. It aims to reduce the impact of industrial activity on the environment.
The Sustainability Index Programme is supported by the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The project was conceived in the mid- 1990s when Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) director Anil Agarwal visited the United States. He read about the work of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called the Council of Economic Priorities (CEP), which rated the social and environmental performance of industries in the US.
The award is given by CSE in recognition of the rating achieved by industries on the basis of their environmental performance in various sectors covered under Green Rating Project.
