Singrauli in Uttar Pradesh. The industrial powerhouse of India with massive coal reserves and numerous power plants. A region which should have been thriving, prosperous and happy.

It’s not. Pollution and poverty reign supreme here.

In mid-2012, CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Laboratory began an extensive analysis of water and soil samples from the region, as well as biological samples such as blood, nails and hair of local people. The aim was to find out precisely what industrial pollution was doing to the district’s environment, ecology and people.

The results of the tests have exposed a tale of terrible contamination and ill-health stalking the region.
