Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to see a 300 per cent increase in generation of urban solid waste -- from 174 million tonne (MT) in 2016 to 522 MT by 2050. With about 70 per cent of the waste currently being generated, dumped in the open, this region is witnessing a burgeoning waste management crisis that is leading to irreversible environmental damage, as well as proving to be a serious economic challenge. The need of the hour, therefore, is to adopt and implement an approach aligned with the principles of circular economy.
Considering the complexities and scale of the challenge, CSE facilitated formation of the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE) in 2021, as a platform to foster South-South cooperation to improve the solid waste management ecosystem in the Global South. The Forum has grown into a community of 22 member-states, of which 18 are African. The community has set a common agenda to advance the programme of circularity in their respective nations.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Government of the Republic of South Africa and CSE would be hosting the 7th workshop of the GFCCE in Johannesburg from January 28-29, 2025. This event will be attended by nominated government representatives from Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. While the members will deliberate on the progress made around the common agenda, they will also discuss how to implement and create sustainable models in accordance with their national policies and priorities. The CSE team will showcase the good practices and learnings from Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 and Swachh Survekshan.
