Over 770 million people in the world do not have access to electricity. Most of them live in energy-poor countries – many of which are in the Global South and are home to half the world’s population. By 2050, these countries, which attract far fewer investments in renewables compared to their richer counterparts, could produce 75 percent of the world’s emissions.
The only way their power woes can be solved is through decentralized distributed power – a power that is supplied in a reliable, clean and green, and affordable manner. Mini-grids, we believe, have the potential to do this. A mini-grid can effectively manage the household and commercial electricity demand by generating electricity at the point of consumption.
In 2021-22, CSE has carried out extensive secondary research and stakeholder consultations with participants from India, Africa, and South Asia. A two-volume report on mini-grids, which incorporated the discussions, has been published online. In continuation, CSE is now organizing a virtual round table to draw up an action plan for the below-mentioned reasons:
The round table is open for participation by invitation only for relevant officials, mini-grid experts and energy access practitioners from India.
