Master Class for Practitioner's Knowledge Building on Garbage Free Cities

To nudge urban India towards a new trajectory of advanced waste management ecosystem, Prime Minister Narendra Modilaunched the SwachhBharat Mission 2.0October 1, 2022 -- with the vision of creating “Garbage-free Cities”. The primary objective of this mission is to ensure that every Urban Local Body (ULB) in India achieves a minimum 3-Star Garbage-free City (GFC) certification as per the star rating protocol mentioned in the Garbage-free City Toolkit released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

The GFC certification exercise has witnessed an upward trend in the last few years with increased participation by ULBs. In 2022, close to 50 per cent of the 4,355 ULBs across India participated in the exercise. A total of 299 cities were certified by MoHUA; nine cities achieved 5-star certification, 143 received 3-star, and 147 were rated 1-star.

Through the GFC certification exercise, participating cities are trying to work on their entire solid waste management value chain focusing on source segregation, door-to-door collection of waste, efficient transportation to dedicated processing sites and diversion of rejects for scientific disposal. 

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is hosting an online lecture to enable more cities to achieve the targeted minimum 3-star certification for ULBs. The lecture would help participants understand the key approaches and indicators for making citiesgarbage-free.The discussion would also help participants understand the role of citizens and concerned stakeholders who are associated in city waste management systems and can help their city achieve the desired star ranking.
