As countries in the Global South experience rapid economic growth, they are also striving to reach the water supply, sanitation and hygiene ambitions embodied under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their success in reaching the targets by 2030 will depend on how quickly and effectively their public service delivery to rural areas will improve – considering the fact that over 60 per cent of the population in the countries of South Asia and Sub-Sharan Africa live in rural regions.
Not an easy task, by any measure.
The May 2022 Joint Monitoring Progress Report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says African countries trying to achieve the 2030 SDG targets will require a 12 times increase in current rates of progress on safely managed drinking water, and a 20 times increase for safely managed sanitation. SubSaharan Africa, in fact, manages to treat a mere 7 per cent of its wastewater
According to the same report’s 2021 edition, countries in eastern and south-eastern Asia can safely manage only 19 per cent of their drinking water; a miniscule 3 per cent of the faecal sludge is emptied and treated, and just 14 per cent of the wastewater undergoes treatment.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a leading think tank from the region with a legacy of over 30 years of work on water and sanitation management in South Asia and Africa, invites you to an online training to understand the challenges in this sphere, and learn about how to confront and overcome them.
The course content has been handpicked and re-crafted from the years of groundbreaking work done by CSE, and will be delivered through learning tools such as presentations, audio lectures, videos of case studies; online forums for discussion, quizzes and assignments.
