Current Reuse Practice
 
Project Initiation: Started in 2015 by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in collaboration with Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO).

Objective: Supply treated wastewater from Bhandewadi STPs to Koradi Thermal Power Plant (660 MW expanded to 1,980 MW).

Challenge: Increased water demand (130 MLD) for power plant expansion; existing Kamptee-Khairy Pench water allocation was insufficient.

Solution: Reuse treated wastewater as an alternative water source.

Partnership: Tripartite agreement between NMC, MAHAGENCO, and Nagpur Waste Water Management Private Limited (NWWMPL).

 
Responsibilities
 

• Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC): Supply raw sewage.

• Nagpur Waste Water Management Private Limited (NWWMPL): Capital investment, construction, and O&M.

• Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) : Payments for treated water usage.

⇒ Cost: Total project cost of INR 195 crore (NMC: INR 90 crore, MAHAGENCO: INR 105 crore).

⇒ Economics:
• Treated water cost: INR 3.4/m³ (vs. INR 9.6/m³ for freshwater).

• Revenue for NMC: INR 17 crore/year.

⇒ Environmental:
Reduced freshwater dependence and addressed water scarcity in the Vidarbha region.

⇒ Financial Details:

• O&M by SMS Envocare: INR 24 lakh/year.

• O& Cost per KLD: INR 11.
