Book Editors for Centre For Science and Environment

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. CSE does research and advocacy for the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable. 

About CSE: 

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) needs a Book Editor for its Books and Publications team. CSE researches on, writes, compiles and publishes many reports, policy briefs and other publications every year (other than Down To Earth, the magazine that it helps publish), on subjects ranging from air pollution, climate change and waste management to sustainable urbanization, food systems and industrial pollution management. 

Job profile for Book Editor: 

The selected applicant will be expected to: 

  • Edit – and rewrite where necessary – the raw copy that s/he would be assigned
  • Advise and aid the design, layouts and production teams on page design, where needed
  • Proofread documents and see through the production process till they are print-ready
  • Meet deadlines as and when required
  • Assist and participate in other initiatives undertaken by the team, such as conducting internal writing trainings etc 

Qualification & Experience: 

Applicants for the position should have at least two years of work experience with a reputed publishing concern/firm where they have done all or most of what has been listed above; an excellent grasp of English language and grammar; a thorough knowledge of editing and proofing skills and techniques; and an acute nose and eye for detail. A passion for environmental and issues and concerns would certainly be an advantage. 

Book Writer and Editor for Children’s Books 

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is also looking for a Book Writer and Editor for its range of proposed titles for children, which would be anchored by the Centre’s Environment Education Unit. These titles are being planned on key issues of environment and development, and will be designed in a way so that they align with current school curricula and syllabi, as well as offer their readers an opportunity to develop and nurture a perspective – one that is, quite often, unique – on these issues. 

The selected applicant will be expected to: 

  • Have a basic understanding of key issues of environment and development, as well as an ability to quickly grasp the linkages, nuances etc that run alongside and underneath them
  • Have the ability to turn this understanding into readable, imaginative content that is suited for children of different age groups
  • Have excellent writing, rewriting, editing and proofing skills
  • Have some understanding and skills related to page design, layouts and illustration with specific reference to books for children and young adults 

Experience of having worked on children’s books would be preferable. 

Please note that both the positions are for ONSITE work. Selected candidates will be working at CSE’s main office in Tughlakabad Institutional Area in New Delhi, and reporting to the Senior Director concerned.
