Buxar is a mythological and historically significant city, located in the Buxar district of Bihar. The city lies in the middle Gangetic region, located 117.7 km from state capital Patna. The city is situated in the western most region of Bihar state, bounded by Balia and Gazipur districts of Uttar Pradesh state. Topographically, Buxar lies on the eastern bank of the River Ganga at an average altitude of 65 meters above the sea level. Buxar city is divided into two halves by Sone canal which eventually discharges into River Ganga.
Buxar Municipal Council is spread in an area of 6.71 sq km. divided into 34 electoral wards. The population density of the city is 15,330 persons per sq.km which is considerably high in comparison to the population density of Bihar (1102 persons per sq.km).
