Call for Applications Young Professionals - Feacal Sludge and Septage Management Leaders Scholarship 2025

Introduction : 

The opportunity to work on an exciting challenge or a research problem is the dream of a scholar, especially, when possible, within a creative and innovative ecosystem. Environment Monitoring Laboratory of Centre for Science and Environment (EML-CSE) is designed to offer these possibilities and support young scholars in their pursuit of excellence. With the possibility of extraordinary personal and professional growth, EML-CSE would preparesthe researcher for an independent futuristic career. The opportunities presented through EML-CSE offers access not only to a department but to the entire research infrastructure and facility of the centre. The non-existent boundaries of disciplines at CSE allow one to unlock the potential to experiment and contribute to the interdisciplinary ecosystem, which has been carefully built over the years. 

The Young Professional Fellowship Programme invites applications from scholars with an interest to work in the sector of Faecal Sludge, Septage, Used Water and Biosolids and emerging pollutants monitoring and management. Fellows are expected to pursue research with significant impact, expand their networks through collaborative research. Selected candidates will work with a scientist at EML-CSE member on a well-identified research problem that leads to a significant research contribution through scholarly publications. The fellowship offers promising young scholars an opportunity to advance their scholarship and academic leadership with the aspiration of joining the top academic institutions in the country. 

The fellowship aims to equip the researchers with the skills and knowledge to conduct independent research. By the end of the fellowship, scholars would be able to produce high quality research and address global challenges and ideate innovative solutions. The fellows will commit to dedicated hours of conducting field and laboratory-based research and are expected to engage in report writing, policy drafting and publishing. In turn they will also get exposed to local culture and experiences which will add to their research output. 

Some of the indicativeareas of research to work with would be; 

  1. Detecting emerging pollutants (nitrosoamines, antibiotics, microplastics etc.) in FS and treated water.
  2. Understanding biosolids (ultimate, proximate and higher heating values) to explore its fuel potential.
  3. Optimizing Co-composting technologies
  4. Scoping of FS parameters to be certified under ISO17025 etc. 

Duration of Internship: Six months

 Who Should Apply? 

The fellowship is for applicants with aspirations for a career in research. The applicants should have successfully defended the doctoral/ master’s thesis (by January 2024) and their research work should be rated highly with supporting scholarly publications. Aspiring researchers from working in the fields of environment / life sciences, environment / analytical chemistry or allied subjects are welcome to apply. 

The candidates who have already submitted their doctoral/ master’s thesis or are planning to submit their thesis in the next couple of months are also welcome to apply.

Outstanding candidates may be considered for regular employment after completion of fellowship. 

Selection Process: 

Selection is based on academic merit, a strong motivation to contribute to the field, and the quality of the research proposal. The steering committee of EML-CSE carries out the selection process. Equal opportunities and diversity are emphasized. Preference is given to candidates willing to spend a minimum of six-month period at Environment Monitoring Laboratory, AAETI and those interested in translating research findings into policy drafts. Proficiency in English, effective communication skills and adaptability to research are vital. 

The selection procedure shall be three-stage:

  • Application Screening
  • Telephone Interview
  • Selection Interview 

Fellowship: 

The selected candidate will receive a fellowship of up to Rs. 30,000/- per month. 

The fellowship amount will be decided by the selection jury based on the writeup and interview performance.The fellowship would be initially for 06 months and can be extended till 09 months upon satisfactory performance. 

The selected candidate will be staying at Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute, Neemli during the tenure. The candidate will be provided with shared accommodation at AAETI and can avail the canteen facilities (at subsidized cost). 

The laboratory is situated at CSE’s residential campus at Nimli, Alwar, Rajasthan – about 100 km from Delhi and 60 km from Gurugram.
