Capacity Building of Local Government Authorities in Eswatini

Since 2022, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been fostering the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE) with the mission to achieve a sustainable solid waste management ecosystem through evidence-based learning, research, capacity building and advocacy. GFCCE is now comprised of 19 member states with 15 African and four Asian nations.

Sub-Saharan Africa is all set to witness a 300 per cent rise in generation of urban solid waste -- from 174 million tonne in 2016 to 522 million tonne by 2050. Currently, about 70 per cent of all waste is indiscriminately dumped in the open. A significant share of this waste is leaked into the marine environment. The region therefore needs urgent attention to prevent the triple planetary crisis. Following a series of workshops with all the member states, the GFCCE has arrived at a set of 14 common agenda points to help institute a circular economy in their ecosystems of solid waste management. In order to accomplish these agenda targets, the member states have agreed to benchmark their cities with the help of a toolkit for profiling and score-based ranking across a range of sustainable waste management parameters to adopt a data-driven approach to policy and practice.

The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) under the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini, as one of the member states in the GFCCE, has entered into a partnership agreement with CSE. EEA and CSE are going to co-host the 6th GFCCE event in August 6-7, 2024 in Ezulwini, Eswatini, for capacity building of local government authorities to support rolling out the toolkit across the nation. The event will be attended by officials from the local government authorities, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, Ministry of Tinkhundla Administration and Development, Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, University of Eswatini, UNDP (Eswatini) and other institutions.
