Climate change and transportation: Aligning electrification and mobility solutions to decarbonise urban transport and enable low emission zone development in cities

""Low carbon growth path is emerging as the central focus of the policy action in India. Transport sector, with obstinate trend in carbon emissions and local air pollution is central to this pathway. Several policies have emerged to enable implementation of solutions encompassing integrated public transport, designing compact and walkable cities, enabling transit-oriented development, implementing vehicle restraint measures like parking policy, adopting sustainable financial strategies and traffic impact assessment of new development. Cities are also implementing several of these strategies. However, these solutions have remained fragmented and are not yet well aligned to decarbonise cities. It is therefore necessary to develop an integrated framing to align these strategies to implement in different zones/areas/wards that will help to do hotspot management and create low emission zones to address vehicular pollution and enhance air quality in urban environments.

In view of this the Centre for Science and Environment is organising a national level capacity building programme for city officials and the relevant stakeholders including urban planners, urban designers and architect-planners to exchange the collective understanding of these issues and techniques and the ways to take an area based approach. This will help to leverage the current mandate of implementing clean air action plans, climate action plans, among others to achieve the co-benefits of reducing CO2 and air pollutant emissions by decarbonizing transport sector.

This programme includes detailed classroom sessions, interaction with well-known experts, classroom exercise, and exposure visits to deepen understanding of the multi-pronged strategies.
