Deputy Programme Manager for Food Systems, agriculture and climate for Sustainable Food Systems Programme

Sustainable Food Systems Programme of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is looking for an experienced candidate as a Deputy Programme Manager to work on food systems, agriculture and climate related aspects.

CSE has been working on food systems that are sustainable from the perspective of livelihood of the farmers, health and nutrition of the consumer, and health of the environment and climate. These areas include non-chemical agriculture; regenerative/resilient agriculture practices and market access for organic/natural farmers; linkages b/w agriculture, GHG emissions and extreme weather events. 

The programme involves policy research and advocacy; capacity building and stakeholder interaction; writing and communicating. 

About CSE

CSE is a public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. CSE researches into, lobbies for and communicates the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable.

Job profile:

The candidate is expected to manage and lead policy research, advocacy, communication and capacity building efforts in order to push for the objectives of the programme. The job will entail research, writing policy briefs, state of the art reports and articles for Down To Earth magazine; interacting with stakeholders – policy makers and regulators in different government ministries/departments at the state and central level, scientific community, farmers, other stakeholders such as media, industry, and NGOs – to push for change.

The research would include collection, synthesis and analysis of data/information from the ground, in addition to other secondary and primary sources. The advocacy campaign will include building networks, making presentations, organizing and participating in meetings and conferences. The candidate should be open to travel within and outside India. The candidate is expected to work independently and also manage other responsibilities or resource in the team, if required.

Qualification and Experience:

About 5-6 years of relevant work experience is desired. Preference will be given to:

  • Candidates with policy research/science/capacity building/implementation experience in the areas related to food systems, agriculture, agro-ecology, organic and natural farming, agri-climate linkages. 
  • Candidates with experience in writing about these issues.  

Necessary skills and expectations:

  • Strong and independent research and analytical skills
  • Writing skills – technical reports as well as articles
  • Communication and networking skills
