The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), established in 1980, is a public-interest research and advocacy organization based in New Delhi. CSE has been instrumental in shaping key policies at both the national and state levels in India, and is recognized globally as a thought leader in environmental science, climate change, sustainable transportation, industrial growth, and governance. The organization has actively participated in global climate negotiations and provided guidance to various governments on environmental regulations, equitable resource use, and just governance.

CSE plays a pivotal role in analyzing emerging trends and challenges in the renewable energy sector. The transition to clean and renewable energy is essential for expanding energy access, fostering sustainable development, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. To support this transition, we are a team to track advancements in renewable energy technologies, state policies, energy accessibility, and the equitable use of resource.

About the Programme 

CSE’s Renewable Energy Programme (REP) is committed to championing the study of the most pressing issues related to the renewable energy development primarily in India and with an international perspective, as well as the international and domestic interventions that characterizes our response to energy access, energy security and sustainable development. Keeping this principle in mind, the team conducts and disseminates research on emerging renewable energy technologies and its commercialization / adoption in practice and help in developing capacities of various stakeholders through trainings and workshops to create multipliers.

Roles and Responsibilities 

We are looking for an individual who would be an integral member of the team, proactively undertake research and advocacy to push renewable energy especially in the context of broad electricity market reforms, equitable access and distributed generation. The candidate will report to the Programme Director, who will give overall research direction to the team.

The candidate, as a part of the team, will carry out research through both primary data collection and secondary literature studies. H/she will be responsible for the team’s research output including reports, policy briefs and articles in media.

The candidate will lead the team’s advocacy effort through various channels. H/she will be responsible for dissemination of the team’s research through active engagement with policy makers, think tanks and civil society. As an avid writer the candidate will actively participate in day to day blogs and articles for Down To Earth (DTE) web and print editions and will represent CSE at meetings / conferences and communicate with the press, television and electronic media. H/she will need to follow regulatory and technical developments in India as well as in other countries, critique policy changes for internal discussions and give feedback to the relevant stakeholders including the Government.

The candidate will assist CSE’s efforts to promote renewable energy in emerging countries in Asia, Africa and other Global South Countries.

Job Profile: 

The primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing timely, factual information and data, as well as in-depth analysis on renewable energy, emerging technologies and innovations, and the link between energy and climate.
  • Supporting CSE’s key role as a convener of stakeholder meetings and industry–government dialogue. These would lead to deeper and up to-the-minute understanding of the sector, technology markets, policies, and regulations. The eventual outcome is to prove policy, regulatory advice and development of strategies to address the evolving crisis of resources depletion and climate change.
  • Writing for the fortnightly magazine Down To Earth and using multimedia and social media to disseminate information and data that emerges.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise, is willing to learn from others; places the agenda of the team before personal agenda.

Qualification and Experience 

  • A Master’s (mandatory) oran advanced degree in renewable energy technology / natural resource management / sustainable development or other relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 5-6 years of relevant work experience in RE policy research, analysis and writing. Including in-depth knowledge and understanding of RE technologies, policies, and programmes. Candidates with relevant work experience of 3-4 years will be considered for the position of Programme Officer.
  • Experience in the developing country perspective. Prior experience of working in an international organization will be considered an asset.
  • Proven record of research and publications with an emphasis on energy access, energy security and sustainable development, including non-scientific communications.
  • Requirement of strong analytical, research and management skills. Demonstrated experience of communication and writing for policy advocacy.
  • Must have proficiency in MS-Office suite. Additional knowledge of data visualization software and dashboards will be an advantage.
  • Must be a team player, open to travel, take initiatives with good networking skills. The position requires time bound deliverables.
