About the Workshop
Although it is difficult today to divert attention from the situation we live in – it is even more important to focus on our primary needs i.e. water.COVID 19 has offered an opportunityfor us to draw some lessons, re-evaluate and develop a heathier relationship with water and our built environment in the future and to tackle future global pandemics.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in partnership with Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD) Government of Odisha,is organising this Dialogue cum Workshop on ‘Water Sensitive Urban Design & Planning - Mainstreaming Rainwater Harvesting in town and cities of Odisha’.
The purpose of the workshop is to sensitise state / municipalauthorities and development authorities functionaries on the potential of harvesting rainwater– through appropriate strategies and methods according to different scale: city/zonal, neighbourhood/institutional and individual scale. The focus is more towards creating blue-green spaces / infrastructures (then individual household leveldesign) integrating urban water cycle, water supply, storm-water and groundwater management with spatial and urban design.
The consultation is geared towards identification of select cities to initiate designing and implementation of model rainwater harvesting projects before onset of monsoons. Identified towns/cities are expected develop a citywide plan to harvest rainwater and act as learning centre(s) for other urban local bodies / development authorities in Odisha and across India.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening HUDD efforts to secure urban water sustainability (24X7 water supply) and addressing increasingincidences of urban flooding – thus leading to improved livability in town/cities of Odisha when considered part of an overall urban strategy.
