Draft Solid waste Management Rules 2024

In December 2024, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) introduced draft rules on Solid Waste Management (SWM), 2024 for public consultation, feedback and comments. Eight years after the existing regime of the SWM Rules 2016, the new draft rules have proposed significant reforms, such as encouraging responsible management of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste by bulk waste generators and incentivising recycling through exchangeable certificates between waste processors and generators.

The draft rules are currently open for public comment until the first week of February 2025. Feedback received will be taken into account as MoEFCC finalises the policy, which is expected to be notified later this year. Once approved, the SWM Rules will come into effect in October 2025.

To foster dialogue and cooperation in shaping these rules, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), in collaboration with SWaCH, is organising this webinar with experts in the domain of SWM. The webinar will provide the participants an overview and comparative assessment of the draft rules of 2024 and its critical elements. It will also collaborate with MoEFCC to create a robust framework for solid waste management in India. Participants joining the event will be able to contribute to the discussion with their opinions and suggestions.
