Empowering Schools in Himachal Pradesh: Unleashing the Potential of Solar Energy

Climate change is the most formidable threat the world faces today. Emissions from burning fossil fuels for energy are a major contributor to this crisis. The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, can replace fossil fuels and mitigate the impacts of a changing climate.

Centre for Science and Environment’s Green Schools Programme (GSP) has been working with school teachers and educators from across India to build understanding and knowledge about climate change, and explore effective ways to teach the subject in classrooms. One of the key initiatives of GSP in this direction is Solar 30. Supported by Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE), this programme aims to work exclusively with selected schools in Himachal Pradesh, with the focus on discussions and knowledge-building on solar energy.

This is the fifth workshop in the series (previous workshops were held in Solan, Nimli, and Kangra) for these schools, collectively known as Solar 30.

The workshop will cover a comprehensive range of topics specifically designed for schools, including the use of solar energy and biogas as fuels; how they help mitigate climate change; and the challenges of solar panel installation and its maintenance. The sessions will also delve into GSP audit procedure and an orientation on tracking the data for solar power generated by the panels.

The workshop will feature a mix of lectures, presentations, videos, hands-on activities, quizzes, and best practices from schools—all set in the sylvan surroundings of CSE’s training facility in the foothills of the Aravallis.

The venue: CSE’s state-of-the-art residential training facility, Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute (AAETI), located a three-hour road trip away from Delhi in Nimli, at the foothills of the Aravallis, near Alwar in Rajasthan. You will love the campus – check it out here.

Do you have to pay anything to attend? No. CSE will take care of the travel and boardinglodging costs and arrangements of all selected participants. Buses will transport you from CSE Delhi (Tughlakabad) office to the campus and back, and the campus offers comfortable twin sharing accommodation and a fully functional cafeteria.

This Workshop is open only to nominated representatives from schools of Himachal Pradesh, handpicked by HIMCOSTE and GSP.
