Environmental and Social Risk Assessment in Project Financing

A two-day training programme on Environmental and Social (E&S) Risk Assessment in Project Financing will be conducted by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, India in collaboration with the IIM, Kashipur and the World Bank Group. The training is suitable for banks, financial agencies, financial research institutes and universities.

With the financial sector is facing an unprecedented situation of very high non-performing assets (NPA) due to delays in project execution, cost over-run and sometimes shelving of the project itself; a part of this can be attributed to the lack of social and environmental due diligence of the project and its surrounding areas by the promoters and financing institutions.

Keeping the above in view, CSE is organizing a 2–day training programme on the subject theme on 19th and 20th May 2016 at at India Habitat Centre (IHC), New Delhi. The objective of this training programme is to build capacity of the participants in identification of environmental and social (E&S) risks associated with project and the impact of such risks on “financing”.

The training program is based on the learnings from several projects implemented in past one and half decades in India and neighboring countries. We expect that on completion of the training program the participants shall have a good understanding of:

  1. Process for Identification of E&S risks associated with the project and its surroundings.

  2. Assessment of risks in funding the project based on the assessed E&S risks.

  3. Clear understanding of Acts and Rules on Environment Clearances and land acquisition.

  4. Decision Matrix for making informed decisions on financing/lending.
