Four day training programme on Waste Management for CEA officials, Srilanka

CSE in collaboration with Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Sri Lanka conducted a four day training programme for 45 senior level CEA officials from the nine provinces of Sri Lanka. The programme was inaugurated by K.H. Muthukudaarachchi,  

Director General, CEA. The DG, CEA highlighted that Sri Lanka needs to adopt for a sustainable waste management model in the coming years and it has the potential to become a model country across South Asia in waste management. He also mentioned about the association of CSE and CEA since 2011 and expressed his interest to continue to work on capacity building and research endeavors in the time to come.  

The programme covered biomedical waste management, hazardous waste management, municipal and e-waste management. Also, there were relevant class exercises for estimation and inventorization of waste streams. Also, the programme included site visit to the newly constructed engineered sanitary landfill site, 42 kms away from Colombo. The main resource faculty for the programme was Sujit Kumar Singh, Dr. DD Basu and Swati Singh Sambyal from CSE. Also, there was a session on overview of existing waste management scenario in Sri Lanka by the Assistant Director of the Waste Management Team. 


The programme received a positive feedback from the participants and many of them have requested to make it a five day course. Most of the participants were satisfied with the methodology adopted for the programme by the resource personnel.
