National Dialogue on Industrial Waste Circularity: A Co-benefit Approach for Decarbonization and Resource Conservation

The circular economy is currently a major focus area not only globally but also at the national level. It works on the principle that ‘waste is not only a waste but a resource’. It is a ‘model of production and consumption that involves circularity (sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling) of existing materials and products as long as possible.

Industry holds a prominent position in the Indian economy, accounting for about 31 per cent of GDP on average. The industrial sector also plays a crucial role in the overall economic growth of a country. At the same time, industries are one of the major consumers of the natural resources, generates a significant quantity of different types of waste including hazardous as well as non-hazardous and are a source of pollution and CO2 emissions.

Circularity is one such tool that not only helps in waste management but brings along co benefits of decarbonization, cleaner air, resource conservation and cost optimization. However, there is a need to overcome the challenges and issues in upscaling of the circularity of industrial waste in the country. Understanding the importance of the circularity in industrial ecosystem, CSE has also published its report on “Good practices in Industrial waste circularity- A compendium” to highlight the challenges and way forward for the country

With this background, Centre for Science and Environment is holding a National Dialogue on Industrial waste circularity: A co-benefit approach on March 4th, 2025, at India Habitat Centre, Magnolia Hall, New Delhi.

The workshop will discuss some of the major industrial wastes produced in the country, their current status, best practices of utilization along with a future vision of industrial waste circularity in the country. The workshop will bring together national and international experts of multiple domains, stakeholders from the government, industries, industrial associations and corporations, regulatory authorities, industrial consultants, and others.
