A four-day Integrated Waste Management training program was organized jointly by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MEFCC), Ethiopia and CSE from 10-13 December 2018, Adama, Ethiopia.
The program was attended by 44 participants which included representatives from the Bureau of Urban Development and Housing from nine regions of Ethiopia and the MEFCC officials. The programme discussed integrated policy, the feasibility of decentralised options and planning exercises on solid and plastic waste, e-waste, biomedical waste and hazardous waste. Each day of the training involved half day of theory and half day of practical application where the participants made waste management plans, inspection and monitoring checklists and action plans for two major cities of Ethiopia- Addis Ababa and Adama.
The training helped in creating a need for formulation of rules (presently not available in Ethiopia) for different waste streams and the bye-laws for enforcement of these rules. Inspired by CSE’s work on the development of waste bye-laws for Zanzibar, MEFCC expressed interest to work with CSE in creating bye-laws for Ethiopia as well as exploring options of decentralised waste management in 3 regions.
