Over much of 2023-24, Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE) water team surveyed more than 250 lakes and ponds under 26 government schemes in four ecological regions of India -- the desert, the Indo-Gangetic plains, the Deccan and the coastal plains – across eight states and 18 districts. The aim was to map the extent of success that has been achieved by various government schemes and programmes in reviving the lakes of India.
The team’s survey has resulted in a unique compilation of 45 best case studies. CSE is organising a national symposium to celebrate these reborn waterbodies and the spectacular efforts that went into reviving them – the compendium of case studies will be released in this symposium.
" The rejuvenation of lakes and ponds has not just brought sparkling water back in dead lakes, but has also led to a rise in water levels in wells and borewells around lakes; increased the land under irrigation; helped in the return of flora and fauna; and revived the local fish farming industry." |
