Meeting with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, 2017

CSE and its team of expert advisors approached Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRUVNL) – state generation company for Uttar Pradesh (UP) to participate in its assessment process. As UPRVUNL found this as an opportunity to identify the present status and chart out steps for the future, they volunteered to participate.

We adopted a three pronged strategy to conduct the assessment of the power stations –

  1. A Survey Questionnaire was shared with the power plant officials, which was prepared after round table discussions with a panel of experts and various equipment manufacturers.
  2. Field Visits and Interviews were conducted with the chief engineer / plant head as well as other senior officials at the plants as well as their corporate headquarters.
  3. To validate the actual emissions from power stations and to provide accurate assessment of technology options, Stack Sampling and Coal Quality Analysis was conducted by CSE. However, due to resource constraints, the sampling exercise was done only on eight units which were selected based on their larger capacity and relatively newer age.

Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) is one of the largest state-owned thermal power generating company in India. The company has a coal based capacity of 5.78 GW, and is in the process of adding 3.3 GW of super critical capacity. Also, 40% of the state genco’s capacity is more than 25 years old, and has already undergone Life Extension (LE) and Renovation and Modernization (R&M). This exacerbates the implementation bottlenecks.
