On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti Muzaffarpur celebrated day long programme on waste management to encourage citizens to join the initiative to keep their city clean.
Sessions
The following events took place during the programme:
a) To begin with, in the morning hours, 6 littered spots in Circle 1 of Muzaffarpur were cleaned by Suresh Kumar, Mayor, MMC, Mr. Ramesh Prasad Ranajan, Commissioner, MMC, Chandra Bhushan, Deputy Director General, CSE, GN Murthy, ITC and volunteers and residents who participated in the cleanliness work. The black spots were also beautified with wall paintings and plantation of trees. After which, oath was taken from residents in keeping their city clean. The objective was to make citizens aware that they are a part of the Swachhta Swasthya Samridhi programme and that cleanliness is not possible without their participation.
b) In the afternoon, Mr. Suresh Sharma, Minister of Urban Development & Housing Department, Government of Bihar addressed a gathering of more than 600 people from the city at Jubba Sahni Auditorium. He told that Muzaffarpur is the first city in whole of Bihar to have undertaken such a grand initiative to keep the city clean and hence motivated the residents to now make the city completely waste free. Mr. Chandra Bhushan, DDG, CSE, Mr. GN Murthy, ITC and other members of the elected board, Muzaffarpur also addressed the gathering and further requested all the residents to participate in this initiative and make Muzaffarpur the cleanest city of Bihar. The cleanest wards, best sanitation inspectors, waste collectors and propagation volunteers were awarded along with citizens of the city who segregate their household waste in the best manner.
c) In the evening a dinner was hosted for the eminent residents of the city. Mr. Bhushan, DDG, CSE urged the guests to take part in the solid waste management work going in the city at their levels as the attending guests can really influence big changes in Muzaffarpur. The guests agreed to be a part of the solid waste management work going on in the city and offered their help in various possible ways. Mahant ji from Garibnath temple, Muzaffarpur elaborated on how he already carries out composting of flowers from the temple. Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology’s principal offered his campus area for doing composting of city’s wet waste. The members also discussed other issues of the city such as encroachment and poor drainage. Few other attending guests were Dr. TK Jha and Director, DEN TV.
Major outcome:
The citizens and the elected board were infused with energy post the event to make the city cleaner and to complete the decentralized solid waste management work in 49 wards of the city.
The resource pool from amongst the most eminent residents of the city such as doctors, lawyers, businessmen, academicians was tapped into.
