India has more than 34 operational C&D recycling plants, but there remains a gap in understanding the financial mechanisms, challenges, processes and economic viability of these facilities. Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), in an effort to comprehend these challenges better, has recently conducted a comparative study of 16 of these recycling plants.
The study finds that while some ecosystems have successfully created a loop where C&D debris is transformed into products that re-enter the construction market, others are in the process of optimising their systems. With over 35 additional recycling facilities planned and government schemes offering financial support such as viability gap funding for smaller cities, it is crucial to cascade the knowledge and best practices from successful cases to a wider universe.
To discuss the challenges and to deliberate on the way forward, CSE is organising a day-long national meet of key stakeholders involved in C&D waste management and recycling. This conference will present the findings from the study and will explore potential policy interventions needed to establish a sustainable and effective C&D recycling ecosystem. We invite you to join the Debris Deliberations.
