The silent pandemic of AMR is a global public health threat of unprecedented scale, with huge impacts on health, food security, livelihood, economies and development. Antibiotics are becoming ineffective due to their overuse and misuse across human-health, livestock, fisheries and crops, as well as due to poor waste management practices at hospitals, farms and factories, besides other contributing factors.
It is time for us to act together: as reflected in this year’s global theme of the World AMR Awareness Week − ‘Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together’.
As concerns related to human health, animal health, agriculture, food and environment are best addressed at the state level, it is critical that all states/Union territories come together and plan for a prioritised and coordinated One Health action in view of local challenges and possibilities.
To flag this issue in the course of this year’s World AMR Awareness Week, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office, India are jointly organising a national stakeholder consultation on ‘One Health Action to Prevent and Contain AMR in Indian States and Union Territories’
The consultation will involve experts and stakeholders from state government departments who are expected to discuss the way forward based on the CSE-WHO report which will be released during the consultation.
