NEP 2020 and Beyond

Event completed

Education for sustainable development (ESD) plays a critical role in empowering young adults with attitudes, skills and knowledge to adapt to global environmental challenges. It is also an effective means to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations. With the evolving socio-economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century, there was a growing need to re-evaluate the existing education system and align it with the vision of ESD — and this exercise led to the formulation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The NEP 2020 marks a significant shift in the educational paradigm of the country. It advocates for holistic and multidisciplinary education for all higher education institutions through the inclusion of courses and projects on community engagement as well as environment education. Following the policy, the University Grants Commission (UGC) formulated new guidelines and curriculum framework for the mandatory course on Environmental Studies (EVS), which is offered in all undergraduate courses as a core component. The policy holds significance for higher education institutions, impacting their curricula, research endeavors, and promotion of multidisciplinary learning.

In this month’s GEN lecture, we are delighted to welcome GEN member Prof Ramanathan Baskar to discuss the various dimensions of the policy and its implications for educators. With over two decades of teaching and research experience, he will examine the NEP 2020 as well as the new UGC syllabus vis-à-vis their implementation in the classroom.
