Dear Friend,
Key lessons learnt during ongoing pandemic highlighted the need for developing robust health infrastructure in coming years as well as expediting vaccination for all. It is also evident that for the prevention of the next pandemic (a zoonotic disease), we need to maintain balance between environment and development as well as we need to work more deliberately on ecosystem restoration.
In water sector, this requires the conventional approach to be more integrated that allows creating blue – green infrastructure / spaces. Decentralised treatment of wastewater, wetland restoration and rainwater harvesting to recharge the depleting ground water and improve the river health. We have done several pioneering works that can guide rethinking conventional water management. CSE School of Water and Waste has updated the web compendium on green infrastructure system (C-GINs) with several case studies to guide the community of practice (https://www.cseindia.org/c-gins/home).
During past two months, we have realigned the ongoing capacity building work with the increased focus on online trainings to capacitate managers, regulators and practitioners (both private and government) for mainstreaming good practices and we have rescheduled our residential trainings and exposure visits to later date.
In this endeavour, we are pleased to put forward this bi-monthly newsletter exhibiting, updates, publications, training, events and more.
We look forward to hearing impact stories of change from all our alumni, partners and readers.
Your suggestions and feedback are welcome.

Progress on Effective Faecal Sludge and Septage Management in Uttar Pradesh - Status of construction of FSTPs and Septage Treated
CSE is supporting the Department of Urban Development, Uttar Pradesh as Programme Support cum Knowledge partner in its ongoing efforts on improved urban sanitation under various national and state programmes - in particular on effective Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM )for citywide sanitation and improved health of rivers and various water bodies. CSE has developed FSSM guidelines and supported DoUD for mainstreaming effective FSSM. As envisaged in the national FSSM policy, Uttar Pradesh state has also prepared a State FSSM policy released in the year 2019.
This was followed with several Faecal Sludge &Septage Treatment plants and co-treatment of FSS at existing / upcoming sewage treatment plants across the state to be completed in a time bound manner - under AMRUT or Namami Gange programme. Currently the state has 3 operational FSTPs (including one Chunar FSTP commenced trial run in March 2021).
