Dear Friend,
This summer has been very eventful and packed three months at CSE. The summer is also perhaps one of the hottest summers we have had in India and other parts of the world. The importance of water therefore in this time and age of climate change – has been driven home to all.
A State Level Advocacy event on Septage Management – Transitioning to City Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) was organised in Lucknow on the 29th of July, 2022. A status report was released in the presence of the Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Sh. Amrit Abhijat and Director, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Ms Neha Sharma and Director General, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Ms Sunita Narain. The report highlighted the last mile issues in the completion and operationalisation of 62 Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (including Co Treatment Plants) coming up in Uttar Pradesh. 3-day workshop on ‘Rainwater Harvesting Systems’ in Guwahati, Assam
22 - 24 June, 2022
Ms Shivani – Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, was invited as a resource person for a 3-day workshop, organised by the Royal School of Architecture (R.S.A), Royal Global University (R.G.U), Guwahati, Assam. The workshop aimed to sensitize young professionals to the need and potential of rainwater harvesting systems (RWHs) and impart knowledge, skills, and attitude required for planning and designing RWHs at city, neighbourhood, and institutional/ individual scales.

Mr Jyoti Parsad – CSE was invited to join the Expert’s talk cum Panel Discussion organized by NEWS18 Rajasthan. The talk was focussed on the current water crisis in Rajasthan and what are possible ways to overcome this water crisis. The discussion was joined by co-panellists Mr Vinod Shah, retired Additional Secretary, Water Resources Department, Rajasthan and Dr Deepesh Machiwal, Principal Scientist from CAZRI, Jodhpur (Rajasthan).

State Workshop: Septage Management to Cityside Inclusive Sanitation
29 July, 2022
CSE in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government’s Department of Urban Development (DoUD), and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), organised a state-level workshop at Directorate, Lucknow. A report titled ‘Sab ke liye swasth shehar : Swachhta ki Nayi lehar’ was launched by Principle Secretary, DoUD, UP on the occasion. The workshop was covered by various regional and local media houses in Lucknow, Bijnor, Jhansi, Rajasthan, NE India Broadcast, Times of India, Hindustan Times, Medhaj News, Wortheum News, Vishwa Jagran etc.

Onsite Update: Tracking and Monitoring for operational FSSM projects in Uttar Pradesh
June, 2022
CSE has partnered with the Department of Urban Development (DoUD, Uttar Pradesh) to keep track of the progress of the state in bringing about reforms and implementing interventions which would help in achieving effective Faecal Sludge and Septage Management. As per the latest data, a total of 153.5 million litres of safely treated faecal sludge has been recorded from 33000+ no. of tanker trips in 8 cities of UP, i.e., Chunar, Jhansi, Unnao, Lucknow, Aligarh, Loni, Modinagar and Bijnor.

Five – days IEC activities and technical support in Chunar, Uttar Pradesh
29 June – 03 July, 2022
CSE – Technical Support Unit (TSU) supporting Nagar Palika Parishad (NPP), Chunar, conducted an intensive five days IEC program all over the town. This awareness campaign covered 2500 Households and 5 government and Private Schools. The IEC campaign focused on three messages; To construct the correct design of septic tanks, get emptied every septic tank in three years of intervals, and check the disposal of faecal sludge emptied by vacuum tanker.

Workshop cum training on Safe Management of Water and Sanitation in rural areas
11 – 12 July, 2022
CSE – Rural Water and Waste programme rolled out a workshop cum training under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and partnership with Ministry of Health, Tanzania, Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda and Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria at Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The workshop is the first of its kind post-COVID hiatus, after working with the three countries online to capacitate them on the issues of safe sanitation and sustainability of water sources.

National Consultation on Water, Waste water and Sanitation Priorities and Learning Collaterals

CSE – Urban Water and Waste programme organised a national consultation workshop in open learning and discussion format on emerging Priorities for Water, Waste Water, and Sanitation seeking input and review to the Green Infrastructure and WSUDP, Groundwater Management & City Water Balance (CWB) training modules, and learning collaterals at CSE. The consultation brought together 18+ practitioners and experts, with a diverse and rich knowledge of emerging challenges in the water sector.

District Level Planning for Faecal Sludge Management in Rural Areas
June 07 – 11, 2022
CSE – Rural Water and Waste programme conducted this tailor-made training programme at AAETI, Nimli, Rajasthan, for the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen officials, to advocate the importance of decentralized treatment of faecal sludge in rural scenarios. A total of 27 officials from the state of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and West Bengal attended the training.

Operation and Maintenance of Faecal Sludge and Co-Treatment Plants
19 – 22 July, 2022
CSE – PSU (Programme Support Unit) successfully conducted a 3 days training programme at AAETI, Nimli, Rajasthan. A total of 34 participants from Uttar Pradesh which included ULB Engineers, UPJN Engineers and Urban Planners. The training programme was mainly on efficient Operation and Maintenance of FSSM plants.

Exposure visit to Odisha to showcase best FSSM practices
04 – 06 August, 2022
CSE collaborated with RCUES Lucknow to organize a 2-day exposure visit to Odisha to showcase the best FSSM practices incorporated by the state of Odisha in their structure of sanitation reforms. 2 Municipal Commissioners (MC), 1 Additional MC, 1 Asst. MC, 14 Executive Officers of various ULBs, one senior officer from RCUES and an Additional Mission Director, AMRUT were part of the learning visit.

Smart and affordable technologies to monitor drinking water quality
17 – 18 August, 2022
CSE – Rural Water and Waste programme and Environment Monitoring laboratory unit, under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), conducted a 2-day laboratory residential training days training programme at AAETI, Nimli, Rajasthan. The training programme was tailor-made for Level-II officials working in Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) district laboratory chemists in different states. The participants were from different designations such as geologists, chemists and chief chemists etc.

CSE Report on sanitation management in cities of Uttar Pradesh released at the state level workshop at Lucknow organised jointly by CSE, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government’s Department of DoUD, and AMRUT. The report highlights the status of the FSSM projects in UP, identifies and provides recommendations to overcome the bottlenecks.
