Capitalising on green hydrogen to achieve net zero
Hailed as “fuel of the future”, it has now become the buzzword to help India gravitate towards zero emissions

Prime Minister NarendraModi launched the National Hydrogen Mission on August 15, 2021. The Mission aims to aid the government in meeting its climate targets and making India a green hydrogen hub. On the occasion, the PM committed to installing non-fossil fuel electricity generation capacity of 500 GW, sourcing 50% of India’s energy requirement from renewables, reducing 1 billion tonnes of projected emissions, achieving carbon intensity reduction of 40% over 2005 levels----This will help in meeting the target of production of 5 million tonnes of Green hydrogen by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2070.

Implementation of India’s commitments to achieve net-zero by 2070 may seem a long way off, but the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is taking various measures to facilitate the transition from fossil fuel to green hydrogen. A call for setting up India’s Hydrogen Valley Platform was announced at an 'International Platform on Hydrogen Economy - An Industry-Academia Conclave 2022'---this event was held in New Delhi on September 30, 2022.

30 schools from Himachal learn lessons on solar
Climate change or global warming is a threat and the world is reeling under it today. Emissions emanating from the burning of fossil fuels for energy is one of the major contributors to this threat. The use of renewable sources of energy – such as solar and wind – is being seen as a key initiative towards replacing conventional sources of energy andmitigating the impacts of a changing climate.

India's renewable energy journey: short-term hiccups but long-term trajectory intact
India’s renewable energy installations are projected to grow rapidly with 35-40 gigawatts (GW) added annually through to the fiscal year (FY) 2029/30, according to this new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Climate Energy Finance (CEF). IEEFA and CEF estimate that renewable energy capacity will reach 405GW in FY2039/30, putting India on track to surpass its target of 50% of its energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.
Delivering on RE targets critical for India’s clean transition
India’s share of wind and solar power doubled from 4% in 2016 to 8% in 2021, but this could only meet 27% of its electricity demand growth during this period. However, its ambitious 450 GW renewable capacity target can ensure that all its additional demand growth by 2030 comes from clean power.
How’s the power sector in India coping with extreme climatic conditions?
Over the last couple of years, India’s cities have witnessed torrential rainfall, there have been landslides in some states, heat waves have taken a toll and there has been a general inability to cope with these extremities that have now become an intrinsic part of our lives, all due to climate change. In fact, disasters related to changing climatic conditions are now the norm and we need to find a way to deal with it.
