Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate
Change programme and Down to Earth.
The transport sector has the fastest growing emissions globally. CSE’s new report Decarbonising Transport lays out the state of play for India’s transport sector with detailed insights on vehicle technologies, electrification, urban mobility, freight, railways, and aviation.
In related news, this week CSE’s Executive Director and the report’s lead author Anumita Roychowdhury comments on the new regulations for real driving emissions (RDE). This is a critical step forward to check gaps between emissions performance during certification in laboratory and in the real-world driving conditions, she says.
Mrinal Tripathi of CSE’s Sustainable Mobility Programme writes about the FAME II scheme for electric vehicles. The scheme should be phased out gradually rather than be subject to a sudden withdrawal, since further support is needed for India’s fledgling EV industry, she says.
Elsewhere, the El Nino phenomenon is on its way, and will likely impact monsoon, according to experts. It could also cause heatwaves and droughts in India, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, the Pacific Islands. We also learn how climate change is affecting India’s food security.
This month, CSE’s Climate Change programme invites you to watch our online discussion on April 19th. CSE’s Director-General Sunita Narain joins other global experts to deliberate on the following question: why
should developed nations be allowed to use natural gas unhindered, while the developing world gets
called out for using coal – when both the fossil fuels contribute to global warming? |
