Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change Programme and Down to Earth.
Developing countries are not only reeling from the aftermath of COVID, the Russia-Ukraine war and inflation, they are also facing record high debt levels, and inadequate investment in climate mitigation and adaptation. These issues were raised at the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring this month. The multilateral institutions are under pressure to provide more funding for poor and vulnerable countries. I summarized some of the discussions relevant to climate change.
Trishant Dev of CSE’s Climate Change Programme discusses how G7 countries – US, UK, European Union, Japan, Australia, and Canada - set a target for renewable energy expansion this month, but could not agree on a date to phase out the use of fossil fuels.
Elsewhere, CSE's Kiran Pandey reports on the early arrival of heat waves this year, with 22 Indian States and Union Territories already recording above normal maximum temperatures.
Rohini Krishnamurthy from DTE, reports findings from a new study which shows that India is currently underestimating the impacts it will face from heatwaves.
DTE’s Akshit Sangomla explains the impact of the El Niño on India - watch the video here.
CSE’s Climate Change programme hosted a webinar last week on the critical topic of an equitable global energy transition, during which Sunita Narain (CSE), Rahul Tongia (CSEP), and Greg Muttitt (IISD) discussed key issues. You can view the recording and the presentations here.
