Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.
The head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Sultan Al Jaber, has been appointed head of the world’s most important intergovernmental climate conference this year – COP 28. In anticipation of pushback from activists that his country’s oil and gas interests will compromise efforts to push for global climate ambition, his comments so far have been measured and cautious. At a summit in Berlin this month, he spoke about the importance of climate finance, and the need to quickly scale up renewable energy. He also threw his weight behind technologies that could capture carbon released from fossil fuel industries– such as CCS, that many are critical of. Read on as I report on his speech at the event.
Extreme and unpredictable weather events continue to make headlines as the World Meteorological Organization warns of a possible El Nino event developing this May-July.
Meanwhile, farmers across India fear the worst as unseasonal showers leave crops lying in mandis and IMD predicts more rainfall.
CSE’s Rohan Malhotra from the Sustainable Mobility team writes about why India should deepen its global partnerships on critical minerals.
As the chorus gets louder on the need for an energy transition, NTPC records 148% growth in coal production compared to April last year. Meanwhile, an IIT study suggests digital literacy helps coal-dependent youth move to other fields of employment.
Finally, do not forget to register for CSE’s Global Online Certificate Course on Demystifying Environment Data for Communication and Impact, link is here.
