Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

As the UN's mid-year climate conference commences in Bonn, Germany,CSE's Avantika Goswami and DTE's Akshit Sangomla bring attention to key topics up for discussion. 2023 must be all about finance. Discussions at Bonn are expected to revolve around filling up a fund to pay for climate-induced loss and damage, concessional finance for the energy transition and decarbonisation in developing countries, more financing for climate adaptation, and progress on negotiations on a new climate finance goal reflective of the true needs of the developing world.

2023 is also the year of the first Global Stock take – a report card of progress made towards achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals.

The spotlight will also fall on the oil and gas industry. “2023 is a crucial year to drive equitable climate ambition. Countries in the Global North, which have already appropriated a giant share of the carbon budget should not be given a free pass on the continued use of natural gas, a significant contributor to warming. The global energy transition pathway has to be for all fossil fuels,” said Sunita Narain, director-general of Delhi-based non-profit Centre for Science and Environment.

Elsewhere, reports from the Leipzig Transport Summit lay out a pathway to decarbonize the transport sector. DTE analysis shows that excess rainfall in Indian protected areas offered no relief from wildfires. And Mitashi Singh, from CSE’s Sustainable Buildings and Habitat Programme discusses why India’s hill states need sustainable cooling solutions to beat warming.
